Leopoldo Coria Sentenced to 40 Years to Life for Second-Degree Murder
Leopoldo Coria, of Tracy, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison following his conviction for second-degree murder. On October 8, 2024, a jury found Coria guilty of the murder of 36-year-old Joseph Valles. The jury also found true the firearm enhancement allegation under Penal Code section 12022.53(d), which significantly increased the length of the sentence.
The charges stem from a fatal shooting that occurred on June 23, 2023, in a residential neighborhood in Tracy. According to evidence presented at trial, Coria and a juvenile confronted the victim as he was walking down the street. A brief altercation ensued, during which Coria drew a firearm and shot Valles, who died at the scene.
“Today’s sentence holds the defendant accountable for the tragic death of Joseph Valles. Our thoughts remain with the Valles family as they continue to heal. We’re grateful to the jury, the Tracy Police Department, and Deputy District Attorney Kathy Murray for their dedication to justice and community safety.” — District Attorney Ron Freitas.
