Justice Served: Anderson Convicted in Deadly Arson Case

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office announces that a jury has found Cyntrial Anderson guilty of the first-degree murder of Leola Johnson and arson causing great bodily injury, with an enhancement for multiple victims, Troy Vanairsdale and Jaysean Coleman. The special circumstance was found true, and Anderson is being sentenced to life without parole.

On January 30, 2023, Anderson, angered over a breakup, lit a fire on her ex-husband’s property at 9523 Bancroft Way, which caused the death of Leola Johnson and severe injuries to Troy Vanairsdale and Jaysean Coleman. Both Johnson and Vanairsdale had severe mobility issues; Mrs. Johnson was unable to walk, suffered from COPD, and required the use of a machine to assist her breathing, resulting in her death. One of Mr. Vanairsdale’s legs was amputated near the ankle; after the fire, it required a second amputation closer to the knee due to failure to heal, exacerbating his injuries. Their two-year-old grandson, Jaysean Coleman, was also severely injured in the blaze. After causing this devastation, Anderson fled to Minnesota with her mother, stepfather, and children to gamble.

“My heart goes out to the victims, Leola Johnson, Troy Vanairsdale, and young Jaysean Coleman, whose disabilities left them defenseless against this hideous crime. The tragedy of their inability to escape the flames underscores the profound injustice here, and this verdict reflects our solemn duty to deliver justice for their suffering. And today, we have delivered that justice," said District Attorney Ron Freitas.

The Stockton Police Department diligently handled this case, and District Attorney Freitas commends their efforts, with special recognition to Detective Cooper. Thanks, are also extended to the U.S. Marshals, and all supporting agencies involved. Special appreciation goes to Prosecutor Alexander Henry for his dedicated work in seeking justice for the victims.
