DA Ron Freitas Announces Remand of Southern California Suspect on High-Volume Fentanyl and Methamphetamine Charges

San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas announced that 53-year-old Walter Merritt of Los Angeles County was remanded into custody yesterday afternoon, August 11, 2026, facing major narcotics charges that carry a maximum exposure of nearly 20 years in state prison. The Honorable Judge Jose set bail at $300,000 and signed a strict 1275.1 bail hold, ruling that the sheer volume of drugs seized would pose a severe danger to society if released into the community.

The case began on July 28, 2026, when law enforcement officers intercepted Merritt for traffic violations while he was driving through San Joaquin County on Interstate 5. A subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered an immense shipment of commercial-grade street drugs, including over 50 pounds of methamphetamine and approximately one kilogram of powdered fentanyl. Merritt was initially released from jail pending charges but was formally remanded during yesterday's court appearance.
