CHIEF INVESTIGATOR

Bureau of Investigation Chief Bill Hutto serves as the Chief Investigator of the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office.  The Chief Investigator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the District Attorney Investigators, Investigative Assistants, and other staff assigned to the Bureau. Chief Hutto performs administrative and supervisory work in this position, directing BOI's investigative functions.

Chief Hutto started his career in the US Air Force in 1984 as a Security Police Officer stationed at Mather AFB. He graduated from the Police Academy and joined the Stockton Police Department in 1990. During his career at SPD, Chief Hutto worked a number of assignments, including patrol, FTO, Street Crimes, Narcotics, SWAT, General Crimes, Gangs, and Homicide. He retired from SPD in 2016 as the Homicide Sergeant.

In 2017, he joined the Sacramento District Attorney’s office as an investigator and worked on Felony trials and later Domestic Violence before being promoted to Lieutenant.  Chief Hutto stayed at the Sacramento DA’s office until DA Ron Freitas asked him to return home to San Joaquin County and Stockton and work for the San Joaquin County DA’s Office.
