The San Joaquin District Attorney's Office announced today that Alvaro Cruz Lopez has plead guilty to violating multiple sections of the Penal Code related to copper wire theft. Lopez admitted to violating Penal Code sections 487j (theft of copper wire), 12022.1 (committing a felony while on bail or O/R), 496 (possession of stolen property), and an aggravating factor 4.421(a)(9) (loss of great monetary value).
The guilty plea stems from an incident in which Lopez was found in possession of approximately 4500 pounds of stolen AT&T copper wire, which cost over $137,000.00 to replace.
As part of the plea agreement, Lopez has been sentenced to 5 years, with 4 years to be served in custody and 1 year under supervision as mandated by Penal Code section 1170(h). Additionally, Lopez is required to pay restitution to AT&T.
"This case highlights our commitment to combating theft and protecting our communities from those who seek to profit from illegal activities," said San Joaquin District Attorney Ron Freitas. "We will continue to work diligently with law enforcement partners to hold individuals accountable for their actions and seek justice for victims."
We want to extend our sincere thanks to the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation and steadfast support in this case. Their dedication to justice is commendable and greatly appreciated. The San Joaquin District Attorney's Office also wants to express heartfelt thanks to AT&T, the Honorable Ronald Northup, and the prosecution team for their invaluable contributions and dedication to justice in this case.
