District Attorney Ron Freitas announced today that a jury found Steven Martinez, 59, of Stockton, guilty of one count of murder (Penal Code section §187), one count of residential burglary (Penal Code section §459), and two special circumstance allegations (Penal Code section §190.2) murder in the commission of a burglary and murder in the commission of torture of Mary Sellars, a 57-year-old resident of Stockton, on February 7, 2020.
The trial took place in Judge Richard Mallett's courtroom. The investigation and successful prosecution of this case were made possible through the dedicated efforts of various law enforcement agencies. Special thanks go to Sergeant Patrick High of the Stockton Police Department, Bobby Cheseldine and Michelle Terra from the Department of Justice, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Hunter, and the incredible prosecution team, led by Deputy District Attorney Elton Grau, Victim Witness Advocate Jessica Vanover, and Paralegal Michelle Vargas.
