Stockton, CA - The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office, led by DA Ron Freitas, announces guilty verdicts in People v. Kenny Vincent Bird. Deputy DA Cameron Sheron prosecuted the case where the defendant, Kenny V. Bird, 34, of Stockton, was convicted of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated and hit and run, causing death.
On December 3, 2023, Frances Laniohan was killed when the defendant, driving 55-70 mph in a 25 mph zone, ran a stop sign and collided with her vehicle, leading to her fatal crash into a tree. The defendant had a BAC of 0.09 and fled but was apprehended by Sheriff's Lieutenant Aaron Dunsing.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the California Highway Patrol for their meticulous investigation and to Sheriff's Lt. Aaron Dunsing for his bravery in pursuing and apprehending the defendant. We also thank the vigilant bystanders whose assistance was crucial in the capture.
District Attorney Ron Freitas stated, "We mourn with the Laniohan family for their profound loss. This verdict affirms our commitment to justice for Frances. In San Joaquin County, drunk drivers who flee will face the law, thanks to the swift action of our law enforcement and community."
With two prior strikes, the defendant faces sentencing on January 27, 2025, before Judge Smalling.
