Stockton, CA - San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas announced today that Joseph A. Maldonado, 27, of Lodi, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of 23-year-old Miguel Ruiz. This sentencing follows Maldonado's conviction by a jury for first-degree murder (PC 187), with special circumstances (PC 190.2(a)(17)) and firearm enhancements (PC 12022.53(d)), as well as robbery (PC 211) with a firearm enhancement (PC 12022.53(b)).
The crime occurred on March 29, 2016, in Stockton, where Maldonado and two accomplices planned a robbery to steal Xanax pills. They lured the victims to Oak Park, Stockton, where Maldonado hid in the bushes, then entered their vehicle, armed with a gun, and demanded the pills. During the confrontation, Maldonado shot Miguel Ruiz five times, leading to his death. The perpetrators then fled in a waiting car.
"Today, the law has spoken with clarity and force”, said District Attorney Ron Freitas. “Justice has been served for Miguel Ruiz. This sentence ensures that Maldonado will never again harm our community, providing a measure of peace to those who have been deeply affected by this tragedy. I want to acknowledge Trina Torres-Alejo, Miguel’s mother, who has endured nearly a decade of waiting for this day. I hope this sentencing brings her justice and closure."
District Attorney Ron Freitas expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Deputy District Attorney Elton Grau for his diligent prosecution, Paralegal Michelle Vargas, and Victim Witness Advocate Laura Reeves for their support throughout the trial. He also extended thanks to the Stockton Police Department for their investigation, notably Detective Lisa Asklof, and to the Honorable Lance Jacot for his judicial oversight.
