San Joaquin County DA’s Office: Protecting Seniors from So-called ‘Pig Butchering’ Scams

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is alerting the community about the surge in so-called "pig-butchering" scams targeting seniors through fake relationships, eventually manipulating them into fraudulent investments or financial transfers. These scams take many financial forms, including cryptocurrency, wire transfers, prepaid gift cards, and even cash.

Law Enforcement’s Role:

Our Fraud Division is actively investigating these cases, identifying scammers, and working to prosecute those responsible. We urge anyone who suspects they’ve been victimized to report it immediately. Early reporting can help prevent further losses.

How the Scam Works:

Beware online romance scamsA pig-butchering scam is a type of fraudulent investment scheme where scammers spend a significant amount of time grooming their victims to trust them before eventually "butchering" them by stealing large sums of money. The term comes from the analogy of fattening a pig before slaughter. Scammers "fatten" their victims by building trust, encouraging them to invest more over time, and making them believe they will reap substantial rewards. Once the victims are heavily invested, the scammer "butchers" them by stealing everything.

Scammers use social media, dating platforms, and messaging apps to gain trust. After building an emotional connection, they introduce what seems like lucrative investment opportunities, which range from cryptocurrency to other financial products. Once the victim transfers funds, they realize the investment was fake, and their money is gone.

Economic and Emotional Impact on Seniors:

Many seniors who fall prey to these scams are left with devastating financial losses, often seeing their entire savings wiped out. Beyond the economic consequences, victims experience emotional distress, feeling embarrassed or isolated after realizing they’ve been betrayed by someone they trusted.

Protect Yourself and Loved Ones:

  1. Stay Skeptical: Be cautious with online relationships, especially those that quickly turn to financial discussions.
  2. Verify Investments: Always consult with a trusted financial advisor before sending money or investing in unfamiliar ventures, particularly if cryptocurrency or large transfers are involved.
  3. Report Fraud: If you or someone you know may be a victim, contact the San Joaquin County DA’s Office. Early reporting can aid in investigations and help prevent further scams.

Our Commitment:

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is dedicated to protecting seniors and vulnerable community members from these predatory scams. By raising awareness and encouraging early action, we aim to stop these criminals and secure justice for the victims.
