District Attorney Ron Freitas Announces Conviction of Joseph A. Maldonado for 2016 Murder in Stockton

Stockton, CA - San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas announced today that Joseph A. Maldonado, 27, of Lodi, has been convicted by a jury for the murder of 23-year-old Miguel Ruiz in Stockton on March 29, 2016. Maldonado was found guilty of first-degree murder (PC 187), with special circumstances (PC 190.2(a)(17)) and firearm enhancements (PC 12022.53(d)), as well as robbery (PC 211) with a firearm enhancement (PC 12022.53(b)).

The case involved a planned robbery, during which Maldonado and two accomplices attempted to steal Xanax pills from a victim they lured to Oak Park in Stockton. Armed with firearms, the group ambushed the victim and his companion. Maldonado hid in nearby bushes before entering their vehicle, pointing a gun at the victims and demanding the Xanax pills. During the confrontation, Maldonado fatally shot Miguel Ruiz five times in the head and chest. The group then fled the scene in a waiting car.

Detective Lisa Asklof of the Stockton Police Department led the investigation, which included key testimony that helped bring the case to trial.

District Attorney Ron Freitas expressed his gratitude to Deputy District Attorney Elton Grau for his prosecution of the case and Paralegal Michelle Vargas and Victim Witness Advocate Laura Reeves for their invaluable support during the trial. “The tragic loss of Miguel Ruiz will resonate in our community. Those who engage in violence must face the full weight of the law and my office, and we will ensure that our streets are safer for everyone, said District Attorney Ron Freitas.

Freitas also thanked the Stockton Police Department, particularly Detective Lisa Asklof, whose thorough investigation was crucial in bringing the case to trial. He further extended his appreciation to the Honorable Lance Jacot for his guidance throughout the proceedings.

Maldonado's next court date is scheduled for December 16, 2024, at 9 AM in Department 7A.
