Stockton, CA - In Judge Orcutt's courtroom, a jury convicted Juan Salcedo, 46, of Stockton, of second-degree murder in the death of Moises Montes. The incident occurred on August 15, 2022, at around 7:15 PM near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Mormon Slough.
Salcedo shot Montes with a .177 caliber air rifle. The first shot hit Montes in the abdomen, causing serious damage. As Montes tried to flee into Mormon Slough and called 911, he was shot again in the chest, which led to his death.
District Attorney Ron Freitas emphasized the day's significance: "We've delivered justice for Moises Montes. This case underscores our commitment to life's values and community safety. I thank DDA Elton Grau, Detective Hill, James Hamiel, Judge Orcutt, and the jury for their critical roles in this outcome."
DA Freitas continued, "This verdict won't bring Moises back, but our promise to his family and this community is that we're here to stop this from happening again."
The San Joaquin County DA's Office remains dedicated to protecting our community and making crime illegal again.
